On April 1, 2025, communities across the country will come together for Take Down Tobacco
National Day of Action—a nationwide movement to raise awareness about the dangers of
tobacco and nicotine addiction. Organized by The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, this event
was originally called Kick Butts Day and began in 1996. It has since evolved into a powerful day
of education and activism, encouraging youth, teachers, and health advocates to take a stand
against Big Tobacco’s harmful influence and continued aggressive marketing to underage youth.
Why It Matters
Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., yet the tobacco industry
continues to target young people with flavored products, misleading marketing, and lobbying
against public health policies. Take Down Tobacco Day is about empowering communities to
push back, protect youth, and advocate for stronger anti-tobacco legislation.
How to Take Action
Here’s how you can join the movement and make a difference:
1. Share Your Story
Your voice matters! Whether you’ve seen the effects of tobacco firsthand or you’re committed to
a healthier future, share your story on social media using #TakeDownTobacco. Personal stories
help inspire change and raise awareness about the ongoing fight against Big Tobacco.
2. Educate Your Neighbors
Knowledge is power. Host a conversation at your school, workplace, or community center about
the dangers of tobacco products and nicotine addiction. Use resources from Take Down Tobacco
to highlight how smoking and vaping impact public health, especially among young people.
3. Engage with Policymakers
Policy change is a crucial step in protecting future generations. Contact your local
representatives and urge them to support stronger tobacco control laws, including higher taxes on
tobacco products, bans on flavored vapes, and stricter advertising regulations. Every email, call,
or meeting with a policymaker makes a difference!
Join the Movement
By participating in Take Down Tobacco Day, you are part of a national effort to reduce smoking
rates, protect youth, and hold the tobacco industry accountable. Whether you’re sharing your
story, educating your community, or advocating for policy change, every action counts toward a
healthier, tobacco-free future. Watch for a Tobacco Free York County Coalition invitation on
our TFYCC social media to take a specific step on April 1 to Take Down Tobacco in our area!
