Tobacco Retail Zoning

What is it?

Tobacco Retail Zoning (TRZ) helps control who can sell nicotine-addicting commercial tobacco products by focusing on where they can be sold. These measures help ensure that there is not an oversaturation of commercial tobacco product retailers in one area and that vulnerable spaces for underage youth such as schools, park playgrounds, and their surrounding areas are not too close to these establishments. The Tobacco Free York County Coalition is looking to utilize both TRZ and other Point-of-Sale approaches to reduce nicotine addiction in under-age-21 youth and to help make our community as healthy as possible. This includes advocating for policies that would help keep tobacco out of children's and teenagers' hands, spreading out the location of tobacco retailers, and having all tobacco-selling establishments specifically trained to sell those products responsibly.
